The different versions of the Covo built
That of the choice of the subject of the Covo is an important decision that the Committee of the “Festa del Covo” usually takes well in advance and announces as early as the end of the previous edition of the feast. Each year the decision is taken having regard to the surrounding reality and paying particular attention to Marian faith and devotion. In fact, all the meetings of the Committee open and close with an Ave Maria recited by those present.
Throughout the different periods, the choice of the subjects to be depicted has always been the expression of manifestations of authentic faith. In the first editions of the feast, from the 1940s to the 1960s, the subjects were real devotional acts to the Virgin of Campocavallo, with the crown and the heart pierced by seven swords recurring several times, to symbolize Our Lady of Sorrows. Then, with time, the choice fell on local subjects chosen from the restricted circle of symbols linked to the Sanctuary and to Marian religiousness (easily identifiable figures, images, emblems).
In the 1970s, the range of topics was broadened to include events, facts and symbols that were not necessarily strictly related to local Marian devotion. Then, starting from 1981, the feast was regionalized and taken beyond the territorial borders of the Marche region. The turning point in the history of the “Festa del Covo” was the reproduction of the Sanctuary of Casalbordino, which took the Covo to the Abruzzo region. In no time, the feast crossed the national borders. In 1994, in fact, to honor the many people from Osimo who had emigrated to Argentina between the late nineteenth and mid-twentieth centuries, the feast was dedicated to the Virgin of Luján. The Covo of that edition is still today on display in the historical civic museum of Armstrong (in the province of Santa Fe) dedicated to Enrico Orsetti (1900-1870), a farmer from Campocavallo who was born in Argentina.
Since then, the Covo has depicted the most important sanctuaries around the world as well as the places of worship and faith that are particularly dear to Italians. At the end of every edition of the feast, the Covo is moved to all the "twinned" locations to be put on display. From the square of Campocavallo it has even reached the Red Square in Moscow!
