Braids of wheat

Depending on the size of the subject and the details to be created, to build a Covo it takes on average from two to three million ears of wheat.

The wheat harvested is made into braids by intertwining one ear with the other. Each ear must be previously kept wet for a certain period, so that it does not lose its grains with use and time. Depending on the quality of the wheat, the type of intertwinement and the position given to each ear, different kinds of braids can be made, which will then contribute to making all the surfaces of the structure different and richly decorated.

The protagonists of this skilful work of weaving are the women of the village who, during the days and evenings of the end of June and the month of July, sit around the porches and work together, from the eldest to the youngest. And this is how, between one conversation and another, they pass on this ancient and patient art, which is truly unique in its kind.
